so me and my sister are going for a road trip this week, and we’re driving down from seattle to califonia. i want to stay in hotels, but she wants to camp atleast one night- my only fear is the bears! just wanted to know if there are a lot of attacks in national parks(like actual camping parks, we wouldn’t sleep in the middle of nowhere) & any precautions to take. if we would camp, it would probably be in oregon or california. should we camp, or just sleep in hotels? PLEASE HELP !!

The mountains in California do have bears, but as long as you keep your food secure in a bear box and keep your campsite clean, you won’t have any problems. I have been camping throughout California and have had a bear come through my camp once. We kept all of our food secured so there was nothing for him to find. We kept our distance and watched him, enjoying the opportunity to see a bit of wildlife come our way.
Most bears would rather avoid an encounter with humans given the chance. The will only attack if surprised, you have food they want, or a sow protecting her cubs. The most likely one is the food situation. So keep your food secure (including toiletries such as toothpaste, deodorant, anything that smells sweet).
California has so many wonderful camping areas that I wouldn’t let a little misdirected fear of bears ruin an opportunity to experience it.
There are also plenty of camping areas where bears are not a problem, such as campgrounds near the coast and in the coastal ranges. Bears are most prevalent in the Cascades and Sierra Nevada Mountains.
I think the guy who answer first is correct in part bears are not interested in humans, but humans have fed bears, left out garbage and then bears relate humans to be an easy food source.Your rite about staying at a campground, Don’t just pull off on some dirt road and pitch a tent. stay at a campground. Talk to the rangers and ask if there has been any bear activity.
Keep food sealed up tight and keep your camping area tidy. Like don’t leave dirty dishes, pots and pan laying about. If you are scared your not going to have any fun camping and you probably won’t get any rest.
Maybe as a compromise you and your friend could stay in a rental cabin, you get the outdoorsy feel but with the safe place to sleep. I **** motels and would rather camp any day.
theres a nice little campground just west of corvalis oregon almost to florence……$ 10.00 a night forest service campground……and bears………I just shoot ‘em they ought to know better than comming in to give themselves up to me!!!LOLOL!!!
You should camp it would be a great experience and you will regret it if you didn’t. Bear attacks are REALLY !! ESPECIALLY in National parks! Just Don’t leave food outside and i think you’ll be good
