Cheap alternatives to hotels in the UK?

camping hotels
sPoInK! asked:

i am trying to plan a trip to england. once there i will be packpacking my way across to ireland and scotland. The airline tickets alone are almost $1000 being that it will be in the summer.

i have the following questions:

1. Is there an alternative to hotels where it would be really cheap to stay in? We would be traveling a lot as we make our way across the countries so it makes sense to save and spend as little as possible, heck we’d even camp outside if we can.

2. Whats the cheapest city in England to land in? I believe the airline tickets are expensive because its London we’d be landing in, would other cities be less expensive?

    Hi there.
I would join the Youth Hostel Association. They have branches all over the world and it will save you a fortune… Even in London!

I don’t know about flight prices into different cities though sorry…
    Have a great time…

Here’s the UK site… But you’ll probably find a more local site near you to actually join.

Try college dorms, they should be empty during summer.

I presume you must live in the US … the cheapest flights to the UK are usually either to Heathrow or Gatwick, the two biggest international airports … I doubt you would find a flight to anywhere else to be cheaper, but you could check out Manchester to see what the price is … the reason the tickets are expensive is more likely to be because you’re looking at peak season summertime, travelling off-peak could be more competitive not only for flights but also for accommodation

the alternatives to hotels are hostels or B&B (bed & breakfast) … there are loads of hostels of varying quality … there’s some information on accommodation, as well as other stuff about London, on

camping is definitely an option if you’re prepared to carry all the equipment with you, although this could be a bit of a problem with your luggage allowance on flights … have a look at … in England you are not allowed to camp just anywhere … if you wanted to buy some cheap camping equipment when you land in the UK you could check out although I’ve noticed some of the supermarkets (e.g. Tesco, Sainsbury) sometimes do cheap sleeping bags and tents at the moment … the biggest problem on camping is that the campsites are not always that accessible by public transport … were you planning on hiring a car?

you can stay in youth hostels or travel in like holiday in and premier inns

    also in bed and breakfasts

the most popluated cities tend to be the most expensive
