Indigenous asked:
I’m flying to San Diego to see my boyfriend, who is stationed in Camp Pendleton. The closest airport seems to be San Diego Airport, which is about 40 miles away. That’s an $80 cab fee! Ouch! There has to be a cheaper way to do this! Any advice?

thumb it, keeping in mind, the only people that pick up hitch hikers are serial killers
Assuming you are not carrying a lot of luggage, take bus 992 from the airport to Santa Fe Depot (Amtrak Station) from there, board the Coaster train to Oceanside. Total cost of the trip, less than $10
If you have a military affiliation, call the base as they may have a shuttle.
Amtrak from downtown to Oceanside isn’t too bad, go to their website. I want to say it’s $15 or $20 and it’s just 2-3 stops.
To get to north county I take the 41 from Fashion Valley (get off in Old Town and transfer to the Santee green line trolley, 3rd stop). Take the 41 to the VA hospital, transfer to the North county bus (101), and ride it to Oceanside. $5.00 day pass can be used on both buses, but if you have a lot of stuff you’re better off just taking Amtrak there and back.
There is a bus that goes on Camp Pendleton, I think it’s 395 and you don’t need military ID for that.Civilians bike ride the roads as a route to San Clemente.
Take the 10 minute bus ride to the train station and take the Coaster train to Oceanside. Sit on the ocean side of the train and enjoy the “Surf Line” route. It’s one of the most scenic train trips in the country.
Bus from airport to Amtrak it is fast, safe, and a lovely ride. Be sure to check Amtrak time schedule before you leave.
