How Many miles to the Gallon can a 1984 Dodge Ram Van Get on the Hwy?

camping hotels
Lilly asked:

Thinking of doing something wild and crazy taking my old Dodge Van I use for 4hr road trips that I use for camping…….
Thinking about going on a LONG road-trip…..From CA- Oregon, to Idaho, and thru Nevada, back to CA.

How many miles to the gallon do you get in your Dodge Van?

My van has a queen size bed, porta potty, curtains, and a/c, everything thing i need, and never have to unpack.

So— should i do it in the VAN??? or rely on the Luxury car and do hotels? I’m looking for a thrill, and think this will be fun for the spouse and dog and me. It’s my idea, so i’m not allowed to complain!

How many miles to the gallon.
Pros and cons welcome.

thanks for your help and ideas.
Kindness and experienced road trippers please.

any cool road stops? campgrouds off I 5, and that road that goes from Portland to Idaho??
I plan on showering!!! State Parks have showers. I’m a dry dirt camper, and a hygene freak!!! i change my underware 2x’s a day for those of you who are worried that i might smell!!! sheesh!!!!
how many gallons to the mile?
and I will be going up I 5, not the twisty scenic route, and Hotel/Motel if i want a break from my comfy bed in the van.
Ron F. has the best answes, check him out!!!

with all that i would say less than 10 MPG . should be fun for a change go have some fun and dont think about the gas bill for a change . it would cost you more to go to a hotel i think anyway . as long as you dont gun it you should maybe do in the 12 to 15 range

It is a cool idea and it is a lot of fun. The difference between the two are like night and day. The money you will save from not staying in the hotels will probably more than offset the cost of the fuel. If you have your van tuned up, and running efficient you can expect some where in the 15 – 20 mpg. Good luck and have a safe trip.

Well, as long as you are comparing luxury motels to that van it’s be cheaper with the van and maybe stopping now and again at the hotel for a real shower and hot tub or something nice like that. You’d still have to pay for gas if you drove and moteled it. I’d worry about it breaking down but, if you are the keeper of this van you probably can fix anything except the biggies yourself. so, do the van trip. No complaining???? Hummm. I don’t know if I’d go that far LOL Enjoy the trip. Go to all state parks and small towns along the way.

I think you should be thinking in terms of gallons per mile rather than miles per gallon.

Oh, and you can sleep in the luxury car, too, you know. (just…hit a hotel at least every other day…else you’ll smell pretty bad by the time you’re done.)

I think you have a great idea. My wife and I have thought about the same thing. The responders have given you good advice. I had a ’92 Ram Van and have an ’03 Ram Van. Both are conversion equipped. With the 5.2L Magnum engine, both do 12mpg city and 15mpg highway (that’s it). We have traveled in the traffic of Manhattan, on the beach at Daytona and through the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. We have always loved the utility and roominess of our vans. I realize the mileage is a concern. However, I would consider this knowledge as a method of budgeting your fuel expenses not as a make or break decision! Enjoy your trip.
