How much money would you bring on a road trip from Illinois to California and back?

I am going on a road trip to California from Illinois and back. From start to finish, it will be about a month, 3 to 4 days on the road each way, and the rest of the time staying with family(and eating out of their fridge, haha). What is a ballpark amount of how much money I should bring on this trip if I plan to camp and/or get cheap hotels?

    200 is not nearly enough. you need a certain amount that you are ok with spending and then you need to bring extra as cushion just in case something goes wrong, emergency, unforseen events. I would bring 600 that I am ok to spend plus an extra 200. so 800 would be adequate for spending ( i wouldn’t even say this would be gas money tho) if i had to add money for gas I would say 800 for money to spend and 200 for emergency money. so I would have 1000 in the bank.
