Is it safe for a woman to go camping alone?

Camping Hotels
Stephanie W asked:

I’d like to travel across country for a move. I love to camp, but have never done it alone. Do you think it would be a safe way to travel? I’d **** to have to get a hotel room every night.
Camping to me means I park my car, pay my little fee, set up a quickie tent and relax. Nothing too intense.

I would NOT recomend camping alone. If anything sleep in your car with the door locked. with a cell phone and a can of pepper spray in each hand.

I don’t see why not If you bring something to protect yourself. It’s legal to park and camp anywhere for free inside a National forest. There’s no reason to think that just because you’re a woman by yourself that there’s suddenly danger everywhere.

Are we just oblivious or in denial about violent crimes (against women) in this country? No it isn’t safe. What kind of question is that? Do you not watch the news?

I camp alone often, so I would say “yes” it is safe under most circumstances. But, I’m particular about where I camp. For “cross country” trips, I always use “KOA” campgrounds. Also, make sure the camp host is aware that you are alone. Usually they will watch out for you.

I would think it would be safe, but by yourself, not much fun.

I dont see why you couldnt do it. Although you would probably be bored out of your mind after the first week all alone. I`d bring a friend or a dog at least for the company.

This sounds like real fun and adventure. It’s safe as long as you use common sense. I would camp in secure campgrounds and the rate would be reasonable too. We have a van–ordinary van and we have camped in the back dozens of time with the back of the van open. We always camped in secure places though–spending from $4.00–$22.00 and they had electrical outlets and nice shower houses too. Much better than the $125.00 per night hotel we once stayed in. Go for it girl–and stay safe. No mace needed.

I don’t see why not, I’ve done it, and i have a friend who has done solo winter camping (also female). Just use common sense. try to stay somewhere where there are families with kids, it may be louder, but you will be safer with the parents probably getting up and taking kids to bathrooms at night!
Good luck, I say go for it!

I agree with girlslovecamping2 … I find that most people that camp are some of the finest people in the world and would go out of there way to help you if you needed it but KOA is a real good option to be safe. Don’t let being a female stop you from enjoying what could be a real fun and memorable trip . A bit of common sense and judgment will go a long way.
And if you really want to be protected buy personal protection devices that are safe and effective. That is not just for females, that makes sense for everyone .
Also I have found that a portable DVD player that can be charged in the car and used in the tent is a good way to catch up on movies and a good way to wind down from the day and give you some good company.

You’re a big girl, I guess if you have no worries then go for it but …..oh well I recon you’ll figure it out.

You should be fine as long as you use common sense and the thing my wife calls woman’s intuition. Stay at reputable camp sites and know your surroundings.

We as a nation listen to the news and always interpret it to our own lives, we hear terrible things and become convinced they will happen to us, Take reasonable precautions and have fun. Don’t let fear rule your life.

Some of the most thoughtful people you can meet are out camping with their families, if they see a woman alone, most of them will be watching out for you whether you realize it or not.

I wouldn’t advise stopping at truck stops and the like, as these are not recreational in nature and there could be people with wrong motives, or stalkers hanging around.

There’s a good camping checklist here
    and camping gear here

    Go for it!
Look for places that have camp hosts or state parks. Search ahead of your stay.
Most campers are there for R&R and mean no harm. Drive around the grounds and pitch your tent near families with kids. Noisy, but probably safer than an isolated area.
    Sounds like a great adventure.
Maybe take a BIG pair of men’s jeans and lay over the top of the tent. Ha.

People are very paranoid now adays, based on some of the answers you got, but in my opinion…. GO FOR IT!!!!!! long live the woman!!!!! Just take saftey precautions (let someone know where you are camping at and if your really worried about something/someone, have say a knife or pepper spray. If you go along with this , i hope you have an awesome time! I envy you so much!!
