What are some good vacation spots in California, Nevada, or Arizona?

Camping Hotels
Bubbles asked:

I live near Los Angeles and don’t want to travel that far. Are there any good vacation spots near Southern California, Nevada, or Arizona? I want to go sometime in August, so no places that need a reservation far in advance, like camping. I want to stay in a hotel and have it be family-friendly. Also, it has to be kinda cheap because we don’t have a lot of money to spend Any suggestions?

Anything along coastal California or the Sierras is going to be expensive and need a reservation in August.

Nevada and Arizona are HOT in August (often over 110 degrees), so mostly what you would be doing is lying by the pool or in the air conditioning and any activities would have to be in the evening or very early in the morning. Not the best time to go to those places. Las Vegas has lots of activities but is not particularly family friendly.

My advice is if you don’t want to make reservations and money is tight is to plan day trips to Santa Barbara and San Diego and other places close by and avoid the hotel costs.

For the lodging, at least, I can recommend. They’ll even let you have the dog in the room. Where to go? Monterey. That’s just about 6 hours up 101.

In Arizona, I’d rent a houseboat on one of the big lakes and just cruise and loaf for a few days, dropping anchor here and there for the evening or just for a quick swim and a lunch…

If you can afford Lake Tahoe, you won’t regret it. Absolutely beautiful scenery, awesome weather, lots of outdoor stuff to do like camping, hiking, biking, swimming.
I live in Phoenix, and it is hot as mentioned below, but not so hot in places like Flagstaff, Sedona, Lake Powell. Steer clear of anywhere below 5000 feet! It will be very uncomfortable.
