It’s only an hour west of Sydney…you can easily do in in a day trip & if you don’t want to drive , a train would be your best bet….
Get off at Katoomba…
I would use my eyes as they are the best tool for seeing things .
Rent a car if you like Sydney,s traffic but I think a tour would be ok I **** the traffic it,s a lovely drive around through the mountains. If you have a lot of time stay there for a week and hire that car and do daily trips in that area it,s really good.
Catch a train to Katoomba. There are a couple of companies that run hop on hop off tours that let you see the major sites at your own pace.
With a Tour group. Did you hear about that got that got stuck in
the Blue Mountain? If you go yourself you coudl get lost. Plus, when you go on the tour group. You get to go into the bush and see wild animals. I would go for “Tour Group”.
Get a train from Sydney to Katoomba or Lithgow. Catch a bus to Jenolan Caves from Katoomba or Lithgow and stay there in the hotel and visit a few caves, then do the “Six Foot Track” from there back to Katoomba. It is a three day walk but can be done in two days (bring tent food and water), it has camping spots on the way and is pretty impossible to get lost on that track (make sure you bring a map which you can get with details of the walk or look it up on the internet), don’t do the walk the other way around ie:from Katoomba to Jenolan caves. Then when back in Katoomba stay in youth hostel or hotel and visit the lookouts like Echo point which has the sky ride and cliff train

good luck!….
Not sure about public buses; rent a car – probably not worth it as the park is easily accessible by local train from Sydney Central Station (unless you want some freedom to drive to different places). Tour group is not worth it either as they are expensive and you can see Blue Mountains easily on your own. There are hotels in Katoomba and other towns, but yes, you can camp in the national park, much cheaper and nicer. There are some nice bushwalks there, i did a three-days one from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves, it was great. Don’t get lost like someone did lately..
