Jesus wasn’t born at Christmastime. Shepherds don’t sit out with their flocks in the middle of winter.

IIRC, they had no choice because they were going to hide there.

It was probably Mary moaning on and on about never going away at Christmas and always having to cook and do the washing up, you know what women are like.

Dramatic effect. Much like the snow that appears on the mangers. It must snow often in the middle of the desert??

The story I was always told was that the romans were conducting a census but this does not make any sense. Evidently there is no record of this census anyway and when the romans did this it was to raise taxes so why would they take man away from his place of work for a census when it would be his income they were taxing. Also if Mary was not married to Joseph which is what we are lead to believe then surely she should be with her family for the census. Also the story has been mis-translated in that the word for an inn not only applied to the building but to the sleeping platform where the guests slept together while the animals were in the same room but on the lower level So what was meant by the story was that there was not room on the sleeping platform to deliver a baby so they had to make up a bed among the animals on the lower floor. This particular arrangement was not uncommon even in peoples homes as the animals would help to keep people warm and they would be safer from being stolen in the night

The Bible says that the shepherds were still in the fields with their sheep. Sheep go in the barns in the winter. Jesus was actually born at the end of September after the harvest. The time of Christmas being celebrated was determined by pagans. Jesus was actually conceived during this time. (9 months= end of Dec to the end of Sept.) The book of Luke give hints to this time as Zachariah completing the course of Abiah and going home to Elizabeth . When the angel spoke to Mary she ran to Elizabeth and John who was in Elizabeth’s womb leaped in her womb at the presence of Mary having Jesus in her womb. (I’ll pass on the prize;..If obahma makes president we’ll all be wearing burkas soon enough)

Joseph had to go back to his home town to be counted in a census.

The decree of Caesar Augustus, compelling everyone to register in the town of his origin, proved providential in its timing, for the prophecy concerning Jesus’ birthplace had to be fulfilled. (Mic 5:2) Accordingly, Joseph took Mary, who was “heavy with child,” on the strenuous journey of about 150 km (93 mi) from their home in Nazareth in the N to Bethlehem in the S. Because there was no place for them in the lodging room, the birth of the child took place under most humble conditions, with the newborn **** being laid in a manger. This occurred probably about October 1 of the year 2 B.C.E.—Lu 2:1-7

Very funny! Second prize is 4 weeks etc. etc.

Joseph took Mary to Bethlehem to fulfill Scripture. The Son of God was destined to be born in a stable in poverty. In His own words during His earthly Ministry He said,” I came to serve -not be served”. And for the record that was the FIRST Christmas so there were no fancy hotels or pre-Christmas booking then.

Bureaucracy. And to the person who commented about snow in the desert, my grandfather was in Bethlehem during WWII and it snowed!

    They didn’t celebrate Christmas then…..
